A Loving Haven - The Bartz Family

A Loving Haven

The Bartz's Family Story

Twenty-five years ago, baby Mark was born in Lethbridge, a terrifying 12 weeks premature. Calgary's Foothills Hospital was nearly three hours drive away, which would have made it virtually impossible for his parents to rally around the two and a half pound infant and give him th elove and support he needed during the critical first few months of his life. Fortunately, the family connected with Ronald McDonald House, which opened its doors earlier that year. They ended up staying at the House on and off for close to two months and returned seven months later for another ten days.

Two year's after Mark's birth, the family faced another harrowing journey when Michael arrived 11 weeks premature. Once again, the family found a much-needed home away from home at Ronald McDonald House.

"It was almost harder the second time around," explains mom, Janet. "Experience doesn't make this easier - you know what you're up against."

Both children were back to Calgary many times for check-ups and other routine tests and each time, the family checked into the House.

"Knowing we were going to Ronald McDonald House reduced the stress of our visits to Calgary," says Janet. "We knew where we were going and we knew what to expect. I think I could drive the route in my sleep! The inexpensive rate also came at a really critical time - my husband had been laid off and I was on maternity leave."

But the family, found much more at the House than just basic shelter. Roy, the boys' dad, recalls that the kitchen was the focal point of daily life, and not just because of the tasty and abundant food. It was the emotional heart of the House - a place where families could find friendship, support, and community. "The kitchen was large enough for everyone to make a meal and share a day's tears and joys."

Janet also remembers the warmth and coziness of the House, with its large windows and welcoming staff. But as they reminisce, together they decide that the best way to describe the House is "a loving haven."

"Ronald McDonald House became our second home and a solace in the storm. When we were exhausted from a day at the hospital, we were always welcomed by the staff and friends that became like a family at the House."

Today, Mark and Micheal are both thriving young adults who are both actively involved in the arts. Janet and Roy are immensely enjoying their two grandchildren, ages 1 and 3. And, they are thrilled that this next generation of boys had far less dramatic entries into the world.

The Bartz Family stayed at the House in 1985 and again in 1987.

Michael and Mark - happy and healthy!
