Pull Tab Program
Ronald McDonald House® Southern Alberta has a great intiative combining recycling with fundraising. We collect pull tabs from pop and juice cans as well as pet food containers.
Various groups such as schools and community organizations collect pull tabs and send them to Ronald McDonald House® Southern Alberta. Then, the House, with their recycling partner, Westcan Recyclers Ltd., recycles the tabs and receives money as you would from pop cans and bottles.

Below is a story of how a local Calgary school got involved in the Pull Tab program. Anyone can get involved and even make a competition of it with another organization!
"As part of the Iginla/Campbell Hockey School sponsorship, we were allowed for our volunteer instructors to play in the Cassie street hockey tournament. One of our volunteers who has been helping out for years is my cousin and along with him and his wife helping with the school, their kids participate in the week. They are from Beaverlodge, AB and made the drive for the weekend to participate in the street hockey tourny. When they were here, we were able to take them on a tour of the House. At the end of the tour the little boy, Thomas said, "I want to collect pop tabs at my school so I can help the house." It was very touching. When we left, I suggested to Thomas that I could get my school to challenge him and see who could raise the most. They would bring their tabs to Calgary at the beginning of July when they came for the hockey school and take them to the house. So, our schools were up for the challenge and went at it. Their school population was significantly higher than ours, however in the end we came out on top. We talked about it a lot at school assemblies and how much the kids were helping in the community and designed a bulletin board that showed a map of Alberta and where Calgary was located in relation to Beaverlodge. We showed the growth every few weeks on how many tabs each school had collected. As well, within our own school we had a contest for the room who collected the most to win a prize. Everyone was really into it and enjoyed helping out. We are continuing with it in our school because of the succcess, the excitement the kids felt and the parents. Our parent council even brought it up in June - how engaged they became in it."
