The History of Ronald McDonald Houses

In 1973, Kimberly Hill, daughter of Philadelphia Eagles football player, Fred Hill, was treated for lymphatic leukemia at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. Fred and his wife Fran kept close by sleeping on a chair in Kim’s room and on benches in the corridor.

Fred and his teammates expressed a desire to help. They recognized the need for a place where families can call a home away from home. This led to a fundraising effort with the Eagles and McDonald’s Restaurants in the Philadelphia area, with the goal of purchasing and renovating a home near the hospital.

The House was named Ronald McDonald House not just because of McDonald’s fundraising efforts, but because the well-known character is a symbol of happiness to children around the world.
